First Daily GLP-1 Pill for Weight Loss Gets FDA Approval
Eli Lilly's new pill version just got approved, and it's way more convenient than the shots we're used to.
Finally, a GLP-1 Pill You Can Actually Live With
The FDA just approved Foundayo (orforglipron) from Eli Lilly, and honestly, this feels like what we've been waiting for. Unlike other GLP-1 pills that come with a laundry list of timing requirements, you can take this one whenever works for you – no need to worry about food, water, or that annoying empty stomach rule.
In the main trial called ATTAIN-1, people taking the highest dose lost an average of 27.3 pounds over the study period. That's about 12.4% of their starting weight, compared to just 2.2 pounds for folks on placebo. Those numbers put it right in the ballpark with Zepbound and other injectable options we already know work.
The Price Tag Might Actually Be Reasonable
Here's where things get interesting – Lilly says Foundayo will start at $25 per month if you have commercial insurance coverage. For those paying out of pocket, it's $149 monthly through LillyDirect with free home delivery. That's significantly less than what most people are shelling out for Mounjaro or other brand-name GLP-1s right now.
The convenience factor here is huge. No more setting alarms for 30 minutes before breakfast or chugging water on an empty stomach. You can literally take it with your morning coffee, afternoon snack, or late-night TV watching – whatever fits your actual life.
What We Don't Know Yet
Lilly's press release was pretty light on side effects, which makes me wonder if they're similar to what we see with other GLP-1s. Most people still deal with nausea, especially when starting out, but we'll need more real-world experience to know how this pill compares.
The company says it'll be available through LillyDirect, but we don't have a specific launch date beyond "soon." If you're currently struggling with injection schedules or can't get consistent coverage for other options, this might be worth discussing with your doctor.
Bottom Line
Foundayo could be a solid option if you want GLP-1 benefits without injection anxiety or strict timing rules. The pricing looks competitive, especially with insurance. Just remember that even pills can have side effects, and weight loss still requires the same lifestyle changes that make any of these medications work long-term.
